[edit] Server Virtualization Project
- Server virtualization is the ability to run multiple operating systems (windows, linux, unix, etc) all on the same piece of physical hardware at the same time. There are several different technologies that can accomplish virtualization. We will be going over one here, installing VMWare Server on linux. Although there are many virtualization products, VMWare, Xen, VirtualBox, MS Virtual Server, ... the one we chose was VMWare Server. The decision for this was simple, you can create a VM in VMWare Server and zip it into a VMWare Virtual Appliances which people can then download and run on top of their favorite OS. Although these VMs are created on VMWare on top of linux, you can easily unzip them into your Windows or OS X box and run them as they were created. Since some of the projects will produce a VMWare Virtual Appliances meant just to be turned on and work, it wouldn't make sense to use a linux only virtualization product.
- The same VMWare client application used to manage Windows VMWare server is also used to manage linux VMWare servers. You can download the client from the VMWare link below.
