Mini-ITX Systems Project

The Mini-ITX platform for computers are smaller than normal computers, and are commonly designed to allow for harsh conditions or to not require a fan. They are ideal for applications like embedded firewalls, embedded network appliances, or carputers. When paired with items like flash storage they offer really high MTBF times that would make great for something you just want to place somewhere and forget about. You can even get some with a watchdog timer to help with system stability.
Expanding the realm of mini-itx into SBCs, you can make an appliance to handle almost anything. In essence, all of the Linksys, Cisco, D-Link, Netgear, etc equipment is all SBCs with something running on them. You can check out the WRAPs used in the Wireless project, or look at some of the routerboards with multiple LAN interfaces for firewall devices, etc. If you want to get even more into it, you can get systems as small as the Gumstix machines that will run linux and some sort of wireless firewall apps.
