Linux is an OS based roughly off of the Unix operating system. It is mostly (if not completely) written in C. It has become my favorite operating system for it's reliability, scalability, and the amount of customizations you make to it. I set up several linux proxy servers over six years ago only to forget the root passwords, and they are still chugging along perfectly!! There are many different flavors ranging in use and specializations. Some are made for small footprints (like Voyage Linux), some are made for enterprise use (like Red Hat AS), some are made for live boot CDs (like knoppix), etc... The list goes on and on.
