Software Projects
- Software projects can be anything involving software customization, configuration, creation, ... Most of the software projects contained on this site will use linux and open source software, just cause both of them are free. A lot of these projects can be useful for home users and SMB users to build to run their network and applications. Certain projects will also be worthwhile for enterprise users to look into. Software projects will be provided in several different ways, but mostly as disk images and VMWare Virtual Appliances to allow you to quickly get the system up and working for your own test purposes.
Internet / Intranet Related
- Open Source Web Content Filtering Project - Setup DansGuardian as a web content filter to filter out inappropriate material for children.
- Squid Proxy Server - Setup a Squid cache proxy server for a LAN. Will also include anti-virus.
- Squid Web Accelerator - Setup Squid cache to act as a web accelerator for slow or dynamic websites.
Virtualization
- Server Virtualization Project - Setup the new Dell Poweredge SC440 server that just came in as a host for virtualization. Originally was going to choose VirtualBox since it just went open source, but later chose VMWare because it is compatible with all major OSs.
Email
- Email Virus / Spam Scanner Project - Using MailScanner as a gateway between the email database servers and the internet to provide highly customizable and reliable anti-virus and anti-spam.
- Email and Collaboration Server Project - Email & Collaboration server based off of Zimbra, the closest open source project I've seen that can compete with MS Exchange.
Administration
- EchoVNC VNC Relay Project - Setup EchoVNC as a relay to allow people both an admin and a user behind firewalls to still use VNC to remotely administer systems, without having to add special firewall / NAT rules.
Storage
- OpenAFS Platform Independent Distributed File System Project - AFS was developed at Carnegie Mellon University then later purchased by Transarc Corporation, which IBM then purchased. IBM branched the project, and now has an open source version.
- Storage Networking Server Project - Setup linux to act as an iSCSI target device for several machines, both running Windows and linux.
Telephony / Fax
- Open Source Voice over IP PBX Project - VoIP PBX based off of Asterisk
- Open Source Fax Server Project - Incoming / Outgoing fax server based off of Hylafax
- Open Source VoIP / FAX / IM / Email Server Project - The goal of this project is to create a server capable of handling most of the communications needs of a SMB using open source and linux. This server will be based off of Asterisk, Hylafax, Wildfire, and Zimbra. This project is in the process of being broken up into more manageable projects
Communications
- IM Server Project - Setup Jabber / Wildfire server to act as an IM server, and also interact with other services.
File & Print
- Secure SFTP/SCP Server Project - Setup a secure SFTP/SCP server that only allows users to browse and make changes to their home folders. Will not allow SSH login.
Network Services
- Bind DNS Internet Caching Server - Setup Bind to cache internet DNS requests only. No zones are setup. This is mostly useful when trying to speed up a single server that resolved a large portion of it's traffic from the internet (such as proxy servers, email servers, etc).

- Nagios Systems Monitor Project - Setup Nagios to monitor servers and services.

- Other Random Software Projects - Security related projects, SFTP server, PGP, and whatever else fits here.
